ADA Compliant Handicap Ramps

GC Construction Services understands that an ADA compliant handicap ramp is more than just a ramp. It is a vital part of making homes, businesses, and public spaces accessible to everyone. GC Construction Services specializes in building ADA ramps that are fully compliant, tailored to your property’s needs, and built to last. Whether you are a commercial property developer, a municipality, or in an industrial setting, GC Construction Services team has the expertise to build code compliant ADA ramps for you.

Why Does ADA Compliance Matter?

The Americans with Disabilities Act sets clear standards for ramp design. This includes, but is not limited to ramp slope, ramp width, landing sizes, and surface texture. If your property is not ADA compliant, it can lead to lawsuits and legal penalties. However making sure your property is ADA compliant is not just about avoiding legal penalties. It is about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their disabilities, can safely access the property. GC Construction Services is familiar with all of the specifications a concrete ramp must meet in order to be ADA compliant.

An ADA Compliant Ramp Must:

  • Have a 1 to 12 maximum slope ratio. That means for every 12 inches of ramp length, there can only be one inch of additional height.
  • The ramp must also be at least 36 inches wide between the hand rails.
  • ADA compliant ramps need to have level landings at the top and at the bottom.
  • Any ramp longer than 6 feet or rise more than 6 inches requires that the ramp have handrails.
  • Additionally all ADA compliant ramps must have a slip resistant, stable, and firm surface.

Our Process for Concrete Handicap Ramp Construction

1. Consultation and Site Assessment

The first step of any concrete ramp project is a consultation and assessment of the site where the ramp is going to be built and or review the project’s blueprints. Our goal is to identify all of the factors that we need to take into consideration when building a handicap ramp.

Some of the things we consider are:

  • Are there existing entrances or door thresholds?
  • What is the natural grade and what are the elevation changes?
  • How much space is available for the ramp and where are the property lines?
  • What are the natural water drainage patterns in the area where the ramp is going to be built?

In addition to the site assessment, we will also discuss the aesthetics of the ramp. What type of finish would you like the ramp to have? Are there additional features you would like the ramp to have such as integrated railings or textured surfaces?

2. Design and ADA Compliance

If your project does not already have detailed plans for a concrete ramp that meets ADA guidelines, we will help assist you to modify your plans to include the necessary requirements.

The ADA requirements include:

  • The correct slop and length of ramp.
  • Adequate width and ramp landing size.
  • Correct handrail placement and specifications.
  • Proper drainage to avoid water pooling or icing.

3. Site Preparation and Formwork

Once we are contracted to build an ADA ramp, the first thing we do once we get on site is to prep the site where the ramp is going to be built. Proper site preparation is one of the most critical steps in the concrete ramp construction process.

  • Excavation – The first step of site preparation is removing soil and any other material needed to create a level and firm base. While this may seem like a straight forward and easy process, it requires a great deal of attention to detail.
  • Sub Base Installation – The sub base is a layer of compacted gravel that is placed on the excavated area. The gravel sub base improves water drainage and prevents the concrete from cracking.
  • Formwork – The final stage of site preparation is formwork. Sturdy wooden forms are built in the precise shape of the concrete ramp that is going to be built. We follow the exact specifications of the design to ensure the ramp will be ADA compliant.

4. Reinforcement Installation

During this part of the ADA ramp construction process we place steel rebar and or welded wire mesh inside the forms to help reinforce the concrete ramp. This will enhance the ramp’s strength, durability, and provide more resistance to colder temperatures. GC Construction Services has experience building ramps for large projects and in those cases a fiber reinforced concrete or additional reinforcements may be recommended.

Concrete Pouring and Finishing of ADA Ramp in Raleigh

5. Concrete Pouring and Finishing

GC Construction Services uses a concrete mixture that is designed for the North Carolina’s soil composition and weather conditions. We carefully pour the concrete so we can avoid cold joints and surface defects. It is at this point that we will apply the specified and required texture so the concrete will be slip resistant even when it is wet. After the texture is applied, the concrete will enter the curing process. Allowing the concrete to cure properly is a critical part of the project because it builds up the concrete’s strength and durability. Depending on the weather conditions, the curing process can take up to a few days.

6. Handrail Installation and Final Touches

Handrails are a necessary component of many ADA compliant concrete ramps. If handrails are required on the ADA ramps, we will anchor them securely once the concrete has cured. This is also the ramp construction phase in which we add edge barriers, lighting, and other details for aesthetical purposes.

7. Inspection and Final Walkthrough

GC Construction Services attention to detail throughout the project makes the inspection and final walkthrough a stress free process. Before we consider a project to be completed we do a thorough inspection to ensure that the ramp meets all design specifications and ADA requirements. We also walk through the project with you to make sure you’re satisfied with the quality of work GC Construction Services has performed.
